For the love of it

I participated in a one-day conference For the love of it which explored some of the assumptions, expectations and myths about working as an artist today.

1 / 1

Date: Wednesday 15 May 2013
Location: Cecil Sharp House,
Booking: Tickets on sale now at £40 includes lunch and refreshments.

With contributions from Professor Lynda Morris, Sonia Boyce, Tom Freshwater, Rona Lee , Doug Fishbone, David Blandy, Edwina Fitzpatrick, The Institute for the Art and Practice of Dissent at Home and Ellie Harrison

With Amy Feneck, and Sophie Hope, I was responsible for convening a special workshop on.....

Value - we collectively explored how artists evaluate their roles, and also how these evaluations - for example, financial, political or emotional, based in labour and/or time, mesh or conflict with other evaluative economies.

Amy, Sophie and I began the session by ascertaining who had paid, who had not, and who was being paid to attend the event. We then posed the question "What do you Value about being an Artist"?

We broke into working groups and began participatory listening exercises, followed by croudsouced answers. After forty minutes, we reconvened to trace some of  the values circulating amongst the various participants.

Trash is TreasureIn preparation for the workshop, I found this report Value, Measure, Sustainability from Common Practice very useful.

There were also sessions on; Research – on artists curiosity inside or outside of institutions, Success – on how we might evaluate achievement, and finally Collectivity – on how artists and audiences work with or against one another.
